How much should I charged on ebay for shipping and handling?

This is my first time that I am selling on ebay.I am selling four little girls used dresses on ebay. The starting bid is 99cents. The box weight is 2-3 pounds and I am planning to send item normal delivery. My fee on ebay to sell item is $3.10, my box cost $1.75. How much should I charged for shipping and handling?

That is the problem with starting your auction at .99. You should never open for less than what you would comfortably accept for the item. Unless you’re 100% going to get massive bidding, you might very well end at .99–and if you don’t have a huge store that makes up for it with cross sales, you’re going to lose money.

You aren’t supposed to make up the eBay fees in the S&H.

S=actual postage cost. You must know the weight of the package before listing your item–guess and you can come out way behind.

H=handling fees, but some things that you can ethically cover are:
1. Cost of packing materials (1.75 is WAY too much for a box, btw) If you are sending priority, your boxes & envelopes are free. Of course your paper & packing peanuts go here too.
2. Gas to the post office
3. Time spent packing, driving & waiting in line at PO–and you can’t pay yourself 50.00 an hour for this. Unless you want to be reported to eBay for excessive shipping charges, or get lots of negative feedback for it.

Honestly, once you get one neg for excessive shipping charges, expect to get another one anytime you charge a penny above actual.

This is what I do & I’ve never had a complaint about excessive shipping. Postage + .50-1.00 for packing materials (I pack items VERY well & securely) +.30 for time/gas. I ship hundreds of packages a month, so that’s enough to cover everything for me.

How did you spend 3.40 on listing something that starts at .99? The listing fees for an item under .99 is .20. Add gallery and that’s just .35 more. Are you including your final value fee? If so, you made enough to cover the eBay & Pay pal fees. If the item hasn’t ended yet, you’ve done something odd in listing. There is no need to use premium listing products like bold or subtitle unless you have a LOT of items listed, or you’re experienced enough to use them well. On a .99 listing–unless its REALLY special stuff–you’ll lose every time.

I’d be happy to help more if I could see the auction. I’ve been selling on eBay for many years as my only source of income, so I have a lot of information to impart. Good luck selling!

I would suggest bringing the dresses down to the post office with the box and weighing it. Then you can have the postal employee tell you how much it will be to post. Take the postage and the cost of the shipping materials and add them together to get the total shipping and handling to charge.
