Microsoft's Office Live Small Business service lets you add a shopping cart, and you can process credit cards through the site meaning customers can shop your store with ease.

Cheers,

you need both.
the shopping cart will have all the code you need to store, display and handle the customer login, ordering and shipping details.
you will need a merchant gateway to process the credit cards for you.
be sure you gateway company can use the shopping cart software and vice versa, that the shopping cart supports transactions to your merchant account.
this can be as cheap and simple as using paypal or as pricey as authorize.net
don't forget to get an ssl certificate and get certified. without encryption, a gateway will refuse to talk to your site.
References :
experience building e-commerce sites.
